Science:

In science we tie-dyed some white material. First we folded the material in different ways and then we put elastic bands over the material to secure it. We used warm water, salt and blue and red fabric dye powder. We put the fabric into the dye and waited ten minutes. When we took the elastic band off, there was a pattern on the fabric. We had so much fun!

Art:

In art we explored the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. We learned about his style of painting and looked at some pictures of his work – faces painted with shapes of fruit and vegetables.

 


We also did sewing using our tie-dyed material. We made our own accessories and they came out brilliant.
 
 
 
 
We learned how to weave using a loom, string and material.

English:

In English we wrote review on our favourite restaurant. First we did a brainstorm and then drafted our review in our copies. We edited our own work and corrected punctuation and spelling mistakes using a dictionary. Then we wrote it on a nice page which we decorated with colours.

 
 
Geography:

Over the past two weeks we learned all about fashion and fads and types of clothing from all around the world. In geography we looked at hats from different countries around the world. Scotland and France have similar hats. Lots of countries also have their own traditional clothes like Africa, Scotland and Spain. Africa has long colourful dresses, Spain has puffy dresses with polka dots on them and in Scotland the men wear kilts.

We also learned about the history of fashion from 1900s-1990s. Dresses changed in length and style, miniskirts came in and out of fashion and jeans were only acceptable from the 1970s!

 


Music:

In music, we listened to African music. We learned a call and response song called Che Che Koolay. We also learned the dance to it and wore grass skirts while we performed it. In Africa this song was passed down from generation to generation. Graziella brought in an African drum and showed us how to play it. She played along to Che Che Koolay while we sang – it sounded great!

 
 

 

Irish:

In Irish we played “Feicim rud éigin le mo shúilín beag a thosaíonn leis an litir…” which is “I spy with my little eye”. Everybody got a turn and it was really fun. We also played a guessing game which helped us learn about Bia agus Éadaí.

We created picture boards together about going to a restaurant with our family and friends and ordering  food.

Maths:

We learned about 2D shapes using pentominoes. Pentominoes are made up of 5 squares. We cut patterns out and coloured them in. We were all given a shape to make eg: love heart, smiley face, castle and a swan. We created the shape and made a poster out of it. They look great!



We also learned about lines of symmetry and designed symmetrical butterflies and clothes.
 
We also explore 3D shapes and made a few different examples with paper and play dough with sticks.


 





 
 

Religion

On 21st of November, it was Presentation day and we went to mass. We learned lots about Nano Nagle - her name is Honora, she lived in the beautiful valley of the Blackwater, she studied in Paris and she set up schools for the poor when it was dangerous to do so because of the Penal Laws. We wrote a poem all about her and presented it to Sr. Mary. On 31st of October, Pope Francis bestowed the title Venerable on her.

 

Science

The Digestive System:

We thought the digestive system was very interesting. We did an experiment to see how it works:

1. We put crackers into a bag and sealed the bag – the mouth
2. Then we put water into the bag and mashed it up – chewing
3. We added orange juice and oat meal – acids in the stomach

4. Then we put it all into tights – small intestine
5. We put a bowl under the tights and squeezed the juice out and that is how the digestive system works – large intestine  
 

S.P.H.E.

In S.P.H.E. we did an advertisement and a brands quiz. We had to name the logos , the names and match them together. In the brand quiz we had to guess how the brand got its name – it was tricky. We also got to make up our own product with a logo and a slogan. We made our own products in teams of six. We had fun and made great products.
